Paint Wooden Furniture

Tools and Materials Needed For Job

  • Brush
  • Foam Roller
  • Sand Paper
  • Wood filler (Putty)
  • Wood Filler Knife
  • Paint-Primer
  • Paint
  • Lacquer or Sealant (optional)
  • Face mask
  • Gloves

Preparing the Home Furniture for Painting Process

Select a well ventilated place and use cloth or plastic sheets to place furniture over it. Clean the furniture and fill the pitted, uneven and scratched areas with wood filler. Apply wood filler and wipe off excessive with a filler knife. Also use wood filler in joints for firm attachment. When wood filler is dried, use sand paper to get smoother surfaces. Now clean the furniture well with a liquid and then with a lint free cloth.

Using Paint-Primer Before Painting

Primer is useful to make the coat of paint to adhere evenly to the wood as well as to get the paint long-lasting. Without primer, paint peel off after few months or a year. Use paint brush on corners and edges and roller on flat surfaces to apply the primer. Don’t worry for the even application of primer, it will be fixed in next steps. When primer has dried, sand it with a fine grit sand paper and then clean the sawdust.

Painting the Home Furniture

Now furniture is ready for applying the paint. Use foam roller on flat surfaces and then paint brush on uneven surfaces and where the roller could not reach. Use paint conditioner to slow down the drying edge of the paint. It helps to make the paint coat more even. Apply a second coat of paint if necessary and let it dry.

Sealant or Lacquer

Although you are done, but for a shiny look, you may like to use paint-sealant at this final stage. It protect the furniture from scratches and add a gloss over it. Again, let the lacquer to dry well before moving the furniture.

Safety Precautions

For personal safety, use good quality face mask to prevent the harmful effects of fumes of paint-chemicals. Carry out all this painting in a well ventilated and illuminated place. Use gloves and full cloths to protect the skin from toxic chemical effects.

Maintain Clean Toilet

Below are some of the suggestions on how to ensure a clean toilet:

Always flush after use and encourage all users to also do same always.

Never use bleach to clean your toilet especially for homes with children and pets. This solution is chlorinated, highly acidic and corrosive which has an adverse effect on the health of your household and the finishing of your toilet.

Never flush solid objects or hard paper down the toilet as this can cause blockage along the toilet line.

As a safety measure, put a trash can beside your toilet seat to always remind users that non-toilet friendly materials can be trashed in it.

In order to clean your toilet, you will be needing the following:

Toilet cleaner solution

Toilet brush

Roll of paper towel

Hand gloves

Bottle of distilled vinegar.

Pour a toilet cleaner solution inside the bowl of your toilet seat and allow to dissolve for about 5 mins. Use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl, the sides and under the rim. Scrub very well to ensure you remove all stains and coloration around the bowl, then leave for another 10 mins. While you wait, apply disinfectant outside of the bowl touching all sides and scrub with toilet brush for a cleaner surface and after which you can flush.

Next is the use of Vinegar; because of its acidic nature it kills not only germs and bacteria but also remove any lime deposits around your toilet. You can start with the toilet tank if you want to remove all the deposits that build up from tap water by pouring some quantity of vinegar inside the tank then allow to dissolve for some minutes and flush immediately several times to remove all vinegar remnants in the tank.

Now back to the bowl, pour about 1 cup of vinegar inside the bowl including the top, inside rim and everywhere around the bowl. Allow it to soak for 30 mins and then scrub or wipe off with paper towel. Pour more quantity of vinegar down the toilet ensuring it fills above the water line to remove hidden bowl ring and calcium build up.

Repairing Wall Damage

The first step for wall damage repairs is to ensure that you know your plan of action. There are two ways this can go. You can either aim to get the entire wall retouched, so that you cannot even tell there was a damaged area. Or you can focus on fixing up the area that was damaged, and leaving it at that. If you are doing this on your own, you will opt for the latter. But if you request professional services, the company will ensure that the entire wall looks as it did before the damage occurred.

You will need tools such as a drill, drywall saw and a utility knife. And you will need construction adhesive, drywall tape and masking tape. Depending on the wall and the type of damage that was done, you may need some additional tools and materials. The key part of the process is to ensure that you are covering up any dents or dings that are in your wall. If there is a small or moderately sized hole, you will probably want to fill it with spackle. Using spackle is easy, and the job gets done within a day. Give the spackle a day to dry, and then you can continue.

Now you will want to finish that part of the wall as best you can, because you want it to be even with everything else. The finishing part can take a bit of time, because you will want to get it right. Sometimes you may start to finish some of the surrounding areas, so the area where the hole was made is not so prominent. If you are not planning to sell your home anytime soon, you can get away with this much work. But if you care a lot about how the wall looks, you may want to call a pro.

Inspirational Wainscoting

Wainscoting can vary in height from 36 inches from the floor to 48 from the floor, basically depending on your ceiling height. You don’t want to go too tall, leave the majority of the sheet rock above the top of the wainscoting. Covering a little over a third of your wall from the bottom up usually gives you the perfect amount for the supportive structure look.

A simple chair rail piece is simply not enough to give the effect. Adding a 6 inch or 8 inch baseboard and changing the paint color between the two to a heavier darker color is relatively inexpensive, but delivers a very drastic upgrade. Depending on your choice of paint color this can take on a wide variety of visual appeal.

While there are quiet a few to choose from a preferred #luxury inspired wainscot is the heavier style 8 inch tall base boards and ½ plywood for the wall between the bottom and top piece. Staining of all the wood will definitely take the level of #luxury up about 10 notches incorporating judges panels will put the icing on the cake.

The style we like to call #Southern Living is where the base boards are A 8 inch square top base and a 4 inch top chair rail, but between the two spacing wood strips at 12 to 16 inches running vertical really brings out the country look. A lot of exterior southern #home styles have this type #woodwork, hence the name. This type also really looks superb with the adjoining rooms incorporating some ship lap type walls!

Basic Home Maintenance

1. Resealing: Nearly every driveway, uses some sort of paved surface, and most rely on blacktop, because it works well, and is relatively, cost – effective. This tar – based, surface, is what, nearly every road, uses. Because of weather changes, chemicals (such as salt, etc), we generally witness, a degree of wear – and – tear, which begins with slight cracks, and irregularities. Rather than let this go, and hope for the best, or try to ignore it, an effective, cost – efficient way, to proceed, is to seal, this area, on a regular basis. In areas, where there is a significant difference in weather, and temperatures, on a seasonal basis, especially, doing this in the fall, will often prevent further damage, etc!

2. Leaves: Commit to regularly clearing, and removing leaves, both, from ground surfaces, including gardens, lawns, and other surfaces, as well as from roof areas, including leaders, and gutters! Doing so, significantly reduces greater challenges, and potential expenses, such as deterioration, and damage to leaders and gutters. Depending on one’s comfort level, this can be done, by the homeowner, himself, or, by hiring someone, to do it for you!

3. Paint chips: Whether on the inside, or the exterior of a house, addressing paint issues, sooner, rather than later, is the most cost – effective, approach! When there are exterior, paint – chips, scrape and repaint, before it gets worse!

4. Clear drains: If you hope to avoid ground water, issues, it’s important to, commit to clearing the exterior drains, so they can do their job, as designed. Remove leaves, and other obstructions and/ or impediments, so you aren’t faced with unwanted flooding, or excessive, avoidable icing, etc.

5. Seal windows and doors: Is air leaking from below, beneath, or the side of exterior doors, etc? Are your windows keeping the cold out? Paying some attention to this, and using items, such as caulk, door – sweeps, etc, will save energy costs, and keep your house, far more comfortable.

DIY Murphy Beds

Piston mechanisms are used to operate them by using two of them. The less common use air pressure to raise and support in order to lower the bed frame. It has the ability to lock when the bed is vertical up hidden in the wall. This lock is a safety feature, however a very accurate installation must be achieved. Old traditional Murphy bed systems use steel springs. Springs are the only mechanism that the Murphy beds should use because they are heavy duty and bring measured balance. These make the lifting and lowering of your wall bed lightweight.

So let’s talk about the benefits of owning a Murphy bed. To name a few:

  • More space available instantly for your bedroom
  • More free floor area
  • Different decor for your room
  • Choose from different styles – horizontal or vertical
  • Simplify your life, less time making up the bed
  • Many options such as, bedrooms, den, living room, tiny houses, guest houses, vacation homes, rental homes, shipping container homes, houseboats, cottages, etc.

Save lots of money by building your own Murphy bed. A ready to install Murphy bed could be more than $2,000 easily. On the other hand, a DIY Murphy bed is going through the trouble of building it, but many people are very handy and have a talent doing these kind of projects. There are hardware kits that might be found for $500 approximately, but others that include the wood and hardware could be around $1,000. So there is a variety of options and prices.

Some people have the money to do it full blast custom made, but many others prefer to make it happen on their own while saving plenty of money to use for other needs. Don’t be frightened by the wood work as you can have these cut to the required measurements by your local hardware and lumberyard store. The same construction details that go into a twin, double/full or queen size Murphy bed are identical except for the sizes. Funny to say, that no matter what the size is, you will find the cost for any of the sizes to be the same.

One of the best options is that they are available in a vertical or horizontal setup. Very convenient for planning well the available floor space that is available.

Picture the place to install your Murphy bed, whether in a room or in a living room inside a tiny house and enjoy the comfort and great space saving setup. Underneath your Murphy bed you can also install a desk shelf that will appear as you close up your bed into the wall and have a working desk, then add a chair and you’re good to go with another advantage and now you’ll have a double-duty bed and desk.

There are many ideas and images you can look up by using Google images and trigger your thoughts as to a variety of things you will be able to do by using a Murphy bed.

Remove Old Wall Anchors

It is important to gather all your items and supplies before you start. The gloves will protect your hands from scratches or blisters, while the towel can be laid on the floor below to manage any drywall mess. It is also important to choose the correct drill bit size for the best results. If you do not have a full set of drill bits, simply purchase one that is a couple sizes larger than the opening in the wall anchor. Keep in mind that if you plan to paint the wall you are working on, you will first need to prime the patched areas where the wall anchor holes were. And if you are planning to install new drywall anchors, be sure to buy ones that can be easily removed for future convenience!

Step One

Remove the screw from the wall anchor.

Step Two

Place the bit inside the center hole of the wall anchor and begin slowly drilling. Use a drill bit that is two sizes larger than the width of the center hole of the anchor. The bit should sit perfectly outside of the edge of the hole, without slipping inside.

Step Three

Once you begin drilling, the collar of the wall anchor should break free from the wall and automatically push itself out. Let it fall on the floor so you are not tempted to grab it while the drill is rotating. Be careful not to let the bit push deep into the wall cavity, which can interrupt electrical wiring or plumbing pipes.

Step Four

Push the residual drywall material back into the hole using your putty knife. You may have to fill this hole in stages for best results.

Step Five

Sand, prime, and paint!

Level A Floor Before Tiling

Before starting your floor levelling project, it is important that you have the proper tools, materials and techniques available. Ensure you have the following before starting this project:

  • Floor leveling compound
  • A Four-foot level Nylon String
  • A Trowel
  • A Drill and Mixing bucket
  • A Five-gallon bucket

Step 1

Identify the high and low spots by using a level. Mark out any low spots using a pencil by drawing wide circles around them.

Step 2

Mix up some floor leveler in the bucket (according to the levelling compound instructions). Usually this involves a bucket being filled with two inches of water. You then pour in enough levelling compound to cover it. You then mix the compound with the water until you have a consistent texture. The levelling compound instruction will tell you the water to powder ratio. Remember that your climate can change how well your levelling compound mixes. You may have to make adjustments.

Step 3

Keep adding levelling compound and water until you have a full gallon mixture. The mixture should have the consistency of the thin soup.

Step 4

Pour your mixed levelling compound batch over low spots that you marked earlier. Always work your way out from the corner, furthest from the door. Give it time to settle and level out before pouring more. Use your trowel to flatten any spots in which the leveler does not flatten itself.

Step 5

Fill in the remaining low spots whilst backing out the room as you go. Let it set for at least 24 hours. You are then ready for your next step, which is tiling the floor.

Tiling Your Perfectly Flat Floor

Floor levelling compounds are fast curing. This means you need to work quickly before it dries. Some can even be walked on within 3 hours. However, it is recommended you leave you new floor for at least 24 hours to be sure the coating has cured sufficiently.
